What is the World Economic Outlook Database Data Analytics Report?
The World Economic Outlook Database – October 2024 Data Analytics Report is a Data Analytics report developed and maintained by Swarm Intelligia in Microsoft Power BI. The report provides analytics of the International Monetary Fund, World Economic and Financial Surveys, World Economic Outlook Database – October 2024 Edition data: World Economic Outlook Database, October 2024.
The World Economic Outlook (WEO) database contains selected macroeconomic data from the statistical appendix of the World Economic Outlook – All Issues report, which presents the IMF staff’s analysis and projections of economic developments at the global level, in major country groups and in several individual countries. The WEO is released in April and September/October each year.
The database contains data on national accounts, inflation, unemployment rates, balance of payments, fiscal indicators, trade for countries and country groups, and commodity prices whose data are reported by the IMF.
The database contains data from 1980 to the present, and includes projections provided by the IMF staff for the next two years. Additionally, the data includes medium-term projections for selected economic indicators. For some countries, data are incomplete or unavailable for certain years.
How do I navigate to the different pages in the report?
There are two ways to navigate the WEO Data Analytics report. The navigation bar at the bottom of the report contains controls for navigating the report. Use the left and right arrows to sequentially navigate to a different page in the report. To jump to a different page in the report, use the scroll bar to scroll through the list of available pages in the report. Select an analysis page from the list to navigate to the selected page.
WEO Data Analytics Home
The WEO Data Analytics report contains ten pages of analytics data visualizations, including Map visualizations, various line, bar, column, area, and combination chart visualizations, scatter plots, bubble charts, and donut and funnel chart visualizations.
The WEO Data Analytics Home page contains a Map visualization and Stacked Column Chart visualization along with a Stacked Bar and Matrix visualization. Select the arrow icon to navigate to the Stacked Bar and Matrix visualization.
Data visualizations on the page are enhanced by additional data visualizations which float on hover and provide additional information for the focal economic indicators (measures).
Chart Visuals
The Chart Visuals page facilitates the analysis of selected economic indicators (measures) from the WEO dataset using various line, column, and area chart visualizations. The visualizations on this report page are supported by a Matrix visualization providing a tabular hierarchical representation of the data analysis.
As with all report pages in the WEO Data Analytics report, summary statistics are presented for selected economic indicators (measures) and are dynamically updated based on user selections and interactions with the other chart visualizations on the report page.
Data visualizations on the page are enhanced by additional data visualizations which float on hover and provide additional information for the focal economic indicators (measures).
Scatter Plots and Matrix Visuals
Scatter Charts (or Scatter Plots) as they are more commonly known display data along a horizontal (x) and vertical (y) axis. The chart illustrates the relationships between the values for the selected economic indicators (measures).
Scatter Plots aid in uncovering relationships and patterns in data, by identifying interesting information about the data that may not be readily apparent by simply examining the numerical values.
A Matrix Visual is similar to a data table; however, it differs as it communicates multiple levels of information in the data. A table supports two dimensions of data in a flat representation. A Matrix on the other hand displays data across multiple dimensions.
The Matrix Visual presents select summary statistics for the selected economic indicators (measures). The data is presented along Region and Country dimensions for the selected regions and countries. Summary statistics include Mean, Median, Minimum, and Maximum values for the selected economic indicators (measures).
Users can cross-highlight elements within the Matrix with the other visuals on the report page. For example, by selecting any of the rows or values within the Matrix Visual, this will update the Chart and Card Visuals to reflect the values for the selected Country and its associated Region.
Users can select rows, columns, and even individual cells and cross-highlight. Select multiple rows in the Matrix Visual by using Ctrl + Click on Windows and Cmd + Click on Mac to cross-highlight the Chart and Card Visuals on the report page.
Advanced Scatter Plots
As with Scatter Charts, the Advanced Scatter Charts display data along a horizontal (x) and vertical (y) axis. The chart provides additional analytic measures, including reference lines for each selected economic indicator (measure), along with a ratio line, and a trend line.
Cluster Analysis
The Cluster Analysis report page illustrates country segmentation based on five identified clusters in the data. Clustering was conducted based on the Total Gross Domestic Product (Current Prices) USD and Average Population (Persons) attributes in the WEO dataset.
Clustering allows for the identification of segments (clusters) of data that are similar to each other but dissimilar to the rest of the data.
Bubble Chart
The Bubble Chart expands on the analytics capabilities of the Scatter Chart and Advanced Scatter Chart by representing data along multiple dimensions. The chart provides time series analysis of selected economic indicators (measures) along three dimensions: country, size, and time.
GDP Share of World Total – Country
The GDP Share of World Total – Country report page provides analysis of the Share of World Total of Gross Domestic Product for all countries within the WEO dataset over the selected Analysis Period.
GDP Share of World Total – Region
Similar to the GDP Share of World Total – Country report page, the GDP Share of World Total – Region report page provides analysis of the Share of World Total of Gross Domestic Product for all countries within the WEO dataset over the selected Analysis Period.
The data visualizations on this page are dynamic and multi-dimensional, and facilitate drill through data analytics along several dimensions, including Region, Country, and Year.
Each of the data visualizations on this page are capable of cross filtering all other visualizations on the page, facilitating analysis at lower levels of granularity.
Data visualizations on the page are enhanced by additional data visualizations which float on hover and provide focused time-series analysis supported by summary statistics for the focal economic indicator (measure).
Top 10 GDP Share of World Total
The Top 10 GDP Share of World Total analyses the Top 10 Countries Share of Total World GDP by Region and Country. GDP is measured by Average Gross Domestic Product Share of World Total and by Total Gross Domestic Product (Current Prices) USD.
